DA adopts social market economy position at policy conference
Updated | By Christelle du Toit
The Democratic Alliance (DA) held a virtual policy conference over the weekend and adopted a social market economy policy position.
The conference was held to discuss economic inequality, separation of party and state, and race issues.
In one of the first resolutions on values and principles, party spokesperson Solly Malatsi said constitutionalism and the rule of law were unanimously adopted by the voting delegates.
Thereafter the party moved on to economic issues, adopting a stance where businesses and consumers rather than government should decide on what to purchase, where to invest, and how much to produce.
Under this policy approach, government would enhance the quality of opportunities available and provide safety nets for economic activity.

The party also adopted a policy position supporting the separation of powers, saying: "Abuse and concentration of power is best curtailed where the three branches of government (the legislative, executive, and judicial) are kept institutionally."

Participants (businesses & consumers) rather than govt. decide on what to purchase, where to invest & how much to produce. Govt. enhances equality of opportunity & provides strong safety nets & trampolines.

Federalism ensures that decisions are made closer to the local people, communities and businesses they affect.
