DA motion of no confidence against National Assembly speaker accepted

A motion of no confidence against Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula is set to go ahead.

This after Acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Lechesa Tsenoli, accepted the Democratic Alliance's motion of no confidence against her.
Mapisa-Nqakula has taken special leave amid corruption allegations.
She’s accused of receiving around R4-million in bribes during her time as Defence Minister.
The DA filed the motion last week and stated it felt its hand was forced as the speaker opted to take leave from her role instead of resigning.
The party's Chief whip in parliament Siviwe Gwarube said they would request other political parties to support its motion.
"Mapisa-Nqakula must resign or be removed through a motion of no confidence. Anything less than that will be a mockery of Parliament and more importantly, South Africa," said Gwarube.
Parliament Speaker Moloto Mothapo confirmed the motion of no confidence on Tuesday.
"The Acting Speaker of the National Assembly has today written to the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition advising her of his decision to accept her proposed motion as being substantively in order” he said.
"On 21 March 2024, the Acting Speaker received a Notice of Motion from the DA Chief Whip proposing the removal of the Speaker from office, citing various allegations of improper conduct. This proposal was made in accordance with Section 54(2) of the Constitution”, Mathapo said.
The date for the motion will be announced after consultation with the ANC Chief Whip Pemmy Magondina.
