Storm-damaged infrastructure leaves some Gauteng hospitals dry

The Department of Health in Gauteng says the damage caused by Tuesday evening continued to impact health facilities in the province.
The strong winds damaged some of the power lines feeding the Zuikerbosch water treatment plant in Vereeniging.
It also comes as the water utility is already under enormous strain due to high water demand.
Rand Water spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says attempts to restart the plant after a power trip revealed faults along the overhead power lines supplying the auxiliary plant.
The repair work started on Wednesday afternoon.
Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said some of its facilities struggled with water supply.
"Due to the challenges experienced by Rand Water which has affected numerous areas, including Germiston in Ekurhuleni, Bertha Gxowa Hospital experienced water shortages
this (Wednesday) morning but the situation improved later in the afternoon as water started flowing in from the municipal line.
"Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital is still relying on roving water tankers from Johannesburg Water and the facility’s two boreholes.
"Pholosong Hospital in Ekurhuleni and Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg are now back to normal as the water supply has been restored," said Modiba.
Modiba said the department will continue to monitor the water supply situation.
"The Gauteng Department of Health has activated contingency measures and continues to work closely with local authorities and water utilities to mitigate against the negative impact of water outages," he added.
