Deputy President David Mabuza resigns as MP

Deputy President David Mabuza tendered his resignation as a Member of Parliament on Tuesday.
The resignation follows after his request to President Cyril Ramaphosa to step down from the position following the ANC’s national conference in December.
The conference saw Mabuza ousted as ANC deputy president in favour of Paul Mashatile, who is also expected to succeed Mabuza as deputy president of the republic.
The resignation comes amid the anticipated cabinet reshuffle by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Spokesperson for the Office of the ANC Chief Whip Luthando Nogcinisa says the resignation was effective immediately.
“The resignation by the deputy president from parliament was submitted yesterday (Tuesday) and it took effect yesterday because it was a resignation with immediate effect.”
In a statement, President Ramaphosa lauded the work done by Mabuza during his time in the Union Buildings.
“His contribution has been valued by the many constituencies with which he has engaged, including traditional leaders, military veterans, civil society formations and international bodies. As Leader of Government Business, he has ably managed the relationship between the executive and Parliament, working to ensure that the transformative legislative programme of this administration is advanced.”
Ramaphosa is expected to make an announcement on the appointment of a new deputy president in due course.
