The driver who fled the scene of the Louis Botha Avenue crash in Johannesburg is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate Court on Thursday.
Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the suspect, who was driving an Avanza, was arrested after the police received a tip-off on his whereabouts.
"The police managed to arrest the suspect [Tuesday] evening in Marlboro," he said.
He allegedly fled the scene on Tuesday after he collided with another vehicle which in turn ploughed into a group of people.
A 12 year-old child died on the scene and several other school children were injured. A man who was also injured in the crash later died in hospital.

The Department of Education in Gauteng said in a statement they were monitoring the conditions of the learners who have been admitted to various hospitals.
"Preliminary investigation into the cause of the accident suggests that a vehicle crossed a robot, hit another car and crashed into the learners who were waiting for their transport to go home," the department said.
Maphakela said the suspect will appear on charges of culpable homicide and reckless driving.
