Electoral Court reserves judgment in MK leadership battle
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Electoral Court on Monday reserved judgment in Jabulani Khumalo’s application to remove Jacob Zuma as president of the uMkhonto weSizwe party.
The MK Party founder appeared in court on Monday, where he denied knowing about an email to the Independent Electoral Commission announcing his resignation from the party.
Khumalo’s legal counsel, Mfesane Ka-Siboto, wants the Electoral Court to declare Khumalo’s removal and Jacob Zuma’s subsequent elevation as the leader to be declared invalid and unlawful.
Khumalo was expelled from the party earlier this year.
The court heard that the former president’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forged Khumalo’s signature on a document to the IEC to create the impression that he was stepping down and Zuma would be his replacement.
The court challenge took place a day after the IEC announced the official results of the 2024 general elections.
The MK party replaced the EFF as the third-largest party nationally.
Khumalo’s legal representative, Mfesane ka Siboto, said the signatures on the letters sent to the IEC are different.
In response, Zuma’s legal counsel claimed criminal conduct and perjury in the MK party leadership dispute.
His legal counsel claimed false statements and unauthorised actions by Khumalo, who is challenging his expulsion from the party.
