Emergency services issue warning amid heavy rainfall

Johannesburg and Tshwane emergency services have warned residents of possible flooding due to the heavy rainfall in Gauteng.

This comes amid a warning by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) of localised flooding. As much as 50mm rain is set to fall over a 24-hour period.

Tshwane emergency services' spokesperson Johan Pieterse says some of the bridges in Centurion have been closed.

 

"We are monitoring the situation. Everybody must be on full alert. There is constant rain, lots of water and people should not cross low water bridges. The bridge at Rabie and End Street has been closed. The bridge at the Centurion Lake Hotel is still open but I believe that it might be closed later this afternoon. Please be on the lookout for dangerous areas," says Pieterse.

Joburg emergency services' spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has called on residents and motorists to be careful on the roads.

 

"The roads are slippery. We asking motorists to reduce speed and switch on their vehicle's headlights. Residents must take pre-cautionary steps in areas flash floods are known to occur including Diepsloot, Ivory Park, Temba Khoza, Booysens and Soweto.  Residents are also urged to keep children and pets indoors under close supervision," says Mulaudzi.
