Eskom urges customers to update meters within 5 days

Eskom's pre-paid customers have less than a week to update their meters before the 24 November deadline.
Eskom is urging its 6.9 million pre-paid customers to update their meters promptly to avoid a service disruption. Meters still using KRN1 (Key Revision Number 1) will stop accepting electricity tokens after the deadline.
In a statement, the power utility explained that once a customer's current credit is used up, they will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable. This would require a replacement, potentially costing up to R12,000, which the customer would be responsible for.
Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution Monde Bala urged all customers, including those who haven't bought electricity in the last six months, to purchase tokens from authorized vendors by 24 November to avoid losing power and incurring replacement costs.
"Customers with meters still on KRN1 have likely not purchased electricity for more than six months or might be using unauthorised tokens bought from criminal syndicates,” Bala further said “This will provide customers with two sets of 20-digit codes needed to recode and update their meters. We started our public awareness campaigns back in August 2023 and we continue to ask users to come forward so we can offer all the help we have available,”
Meanwhile, Eskom’s 36.1% tariff hike has sparked mixed reactions from political parties, civil society groups, and the public, who have called the proposal “unattainable.”
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) is urging the public to voice their concerns and send submissions to the public hearings that continue across the country until the 4th of December.
