'Food poisoning' sees dozens of pupils hospitalised in Bloemfontein
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Free State Department of Health on Thursday confirmed the hospitalisation of 47 pupils in Bloemfontein due to suspected food poisoning.
The pupils from Ihobe Primary School in Phahameng reportedly ate chocolate bought from vendors at the school.
Free State Health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi said the children were taken to Pelonomi Hospital.
"They are suffering from stomach cramps; when this incident was noticed, some other parents came to take their children home, but when they were at home, the children experienced complications, and they brought them to the hospital.
"The good news is that the one that was seen at Netcare has been discharged. There’s only four children left at the hospital. One of them is still admitted, and three are being prepared to be discharged."
This is the third suspected food poisoning incident in the province in just one day.
