A crowdsourcing initiative by some former SA Express employees has won the bid buy the state-owned entity.
SA Express currently under liquidation.
The former employees, under the banner of Fly SAX, decided to bid for the airline in order to try and save at least 691 jobs.
"We last got paid in February when the company went under provisional liquidation, we tried to get our salaries and the department to retrench us before the final liquidation but that did not yield any results," says spokesperson Thembisile Sikhakhane.

"With the help of Uprise Africa, we decided to change the future of the company and put up a bid.”
She said the liquidators will now dispose of SA Express assets due to the high storage and maintenance costs.
Uprise Africa spokesperson Vuyisa Qabaka said the campaign to raise the funds for SA Express has begun.
"There is a board meeting this weekend that will approve and confirm what portion of the funds will be raised publicly. There is going to be a need for strategic partnerships due to the magnitude of this deal."
