Former director-general at the National Intelligence Agency Billy Masetlha has died at the age of 68.
Masetlha’s death was confirmed by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation on Sunday.
Masetlha, who was serving as South Africa's ambassador to Algeria, died on Sunday after a long-term illness.
Over the years he had served the government in various capacities, including as National Intelligence Agency director-general.
He left the agency in 2006 after former president Thabo Mbeki fired him after he was accused of spying on behalf of former president Jacob Zuma.
“We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ambassador Masetlha,” said International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor.
“South Africa has lost an experienced and dependable representative and a firm believer in the ideals and goals of Pan-Africanism.”
