Gauteng Health calls for 'immediate' return of striking workers
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The Gauteng Department of Health issued a circular calling on Thursday in which it calls on striking staff to return to work.
This comes after the Labour Court in Johannesburg granted the department an interdict against striking members of trade union Nehawu on Wednesday.
Nehawu downed tools on Monday.
They are demanding a wage increase of between 10 and 12%, while government has so far only offered a hike of 4.7%.
Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says failure to report to work will result in the 'no work no pay' principle being applied.
“The department can now assure that its employees will be working in a safe and intimidation-free environment after engagements with the law enforcement agencies.
“The court order, amongst others, instructed the South African Police Service to take all steps necessary to give effect to the interim order including the removal and expulsion of any person from properties and premises of GDoH.”
Workers have been ordered not to obstruct the rendering of health services to any patients during the strike or cause damage to property.
