Hermione Cronje: ‘We are moving’, as Mdluli case is transferred to high court
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The head of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) investigating unit Hermione Cronje has hailed the progress made in the case against former police intelligence head Richard Mdluli.
The fraud and corruption case against Mdluli and two other former officials was on Wednesday transferred to the High Court in Pretoria for trial in November.
The trio are accused of abusing the police intelligence slush fund.
Cronje says the Richard Mdluli case is one of several emanating from the commission of inquiry into state capture.
Cronje says there is a serious appetite from law enforcement to finalise stalled cases.
"We once again must state that we are systematically moving up the ladder,” says Cronje.
Cronje says she took over the case in 2019 after it was struck off the roll due to a lack of access to the then classified secret services procurement documents.
“Immediately when I took up office in May 2019, my team made up of assigned Hawks investigators brought up the request for declassification to the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi and National Police Commissioner Kehla Sitole to assist in that regard.
"The investigators were frustrated with the long delays. I’m pleased that within seven days from today the defence will receive those documents in order to prepare for trial.”
