IEC commissioner Masuku’s nephew added to fraud case

The nephew of graft-accused IEC commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku was the latest suspect to appear before the specialised commercial crimes court in Palm Ridge in the R1.2 million Standard Bank ‘Adopt A School Trust’ fraud matter.
On Tuesday morning, Ciniso Masuku (30) handed himself to the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation.
“The accused handed himself over this morning and was processed at the Johannesburg Central police station on charges of fraud and theft in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act,” said Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale.
Masuku was granted bail of R20,000, and the matter was remanded until February 2025.
A police investigation revealed that Masuku allegedly unlawfully benefited from the bank's corporate social investment programme as an undue recipient.
Dr Masuku was arrested in June on allegations that she fraudulently awarded scholarships to her friends and relatives during her tenure as head of the CSI programme.
The trust was intended to provide scholarships and bursaries to pupils in schools adopted by the Standard Bank programme.
In September, a second accused was added to the case after Phillip le Roux handed himself to the police for his role in the alleged fraudulent activity.
Le Roux was granted bail of R10, 000.
