IEC to launch online voter registration platform
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is looking at acquiring new technology to assist with the 2021 local government elections.

The electoral commission is set to lunch an online voter registration platform to curb the cost of the two registration weekends.
The commission's Deputy CEO Masego Sheburi told MPs on Tuesday that the two registration weekends no longer makes financial sense.
"In doing so we are now looking at other cost-effective means to assist us in registering voters.
"We should in the course of this year launch and announce an online voter registration platform that will facilitate a remote registration by voters," says Sheburi.
The electoral commission also told Parliament's home affairs committee that 26.5 million South Africans are registered to vote.
IEC Chairperson Glen Mashini said tender processes are underway to acquire new voter management device as ageing “zip zip” machines are now obsolete.
"This device will allow the elections officials to verify the voter registration details and in addition to record participation in real-time which will prevent chances of multiple voting.”
