Inmate dies in Makhado prison fire
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed the death of one inmate in a fire which broke out at the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Facility in Makhado.
The fire broke out in the kitchen section on Monday afternoon.
The affected section of the facility houses close to 1 900 inmates.
Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services Singabakho Nxumalo says subsequent investigations found that it was the inmates who started the fire.
“Currently, we are moving inmates to other facilities as it is not safe to keep them there as the structure has been burnt down. It's inmates who started the fire, and investigations are ongoing to find out why they burnt down the prison.”
Nxumalo says the cause of the inmate's death has not been established.
