Former senior policeman and convicted child killer Marius van der Westhuizen has been granted parole.
Van der Westhuizen, who was attached to the Claremont police station in the Western Cape, was convicted of murdering his three children in 2006.
It's reported he shot the children, aged 16, five years and 21 months, to punish his wife.
Van der Westhuizen served 13 years of his 24-year sentence.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed he will be placed on parole on 31 July.
"This was Van der Westhuizen's third appearance before the Correctional Services Parole Board, with his first session occurring in December 2022. Parole was not granted at that time due to the need for further profiling.
"Van der Westhuizen has accepted responsibility for his crimes and has participated in therapeutic and other rehabilitation interventions. The victims were involved in the parole-hearing process and have been informed of the CSPB's decision," said department spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.
According to the department, Van der Westhuizen will attend pre-release programs to help him transition to life after incarceration before he is released.
"Upon his release, he will complete the remainder of his sentence under community corrections, monitored according to parole conditions."
His sentence is set to expire in September 2034.
