KZN ANC integrity commission gives Zandile Gumede green light to return to work

Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede has been given the green light to return to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature.
The party’s provincial integrity commission submitted a report to the provincial executive committee which recommended Gumede to be reinstated in all her positions within the organisation.
Gumede was asked to step aside pending clearance from the commission.
She’s currently out on bail on fraud and corruption charges relating to a multi-million-rand Durban Solid Waste tender.
ANC KZN spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela says they have confidence in Gumede to continue her work, despite the pending court case.
“The integrity committee met as early as October, she explained her case and the matter pending in court. The integrity committee took into cognizance that the matter has been in court now for almost more than a year with no charges being formulated or finalised by the NPA.
“The integrity committee, after having engaged in her, was of the view that she should be reinstated in all her responsibilities. Of course, this will be determined by the NEC finalising the guidelines for stepping aside,” Ntombela adds.
The party’s national executive committee is yet to issue guidelines on how embattled leaders and members must be dealt with.
