"The ANC needs to be very, very careful," is the response from Buccus describing the latest court battle sparked by internal divisions within the governing party.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court interdicted the KwaZulu-Natal provincial conference from proceeding with its elective conference, planned for the past weekend.

It is reported that a pro-Zuma faction instituted the legal proceedings.

According to Buccus, the political unrest in the province is all about power and influence.

"Political killings are linked to patronage, and people will kill when it comes to having access to a job, access to a contract, access to a tender. All of it is about money and patronage so in all likelihood this will not only continue, but is likely to intensify."

Delegates at the conference heckled the party's national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe on Friday evening - only allowing the provincial coordinator, Sihle Zikalala to have a say.

An apology has since been issued.

Zikalala said during a press conference held at the weekend that some provincial members are frustrated by "interference" from national level.

"The reality now is that it is very deeply tied to the politics of patronage and the politics of who controls the public purse."

"We need to be very careful about politics of division and a kind that simply wants to divide the ANC for people's own personal and individual agendas."
