Limpopo tourism beginning to 'rise again from the ashes', says MEC
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
MEC for Tourism in Limpopo, Thabo Mokone, says the sector is beginning to “rise again” after five months of hard lockdown as a result of Covid-19.
Mokone made the reamarks on Thursday during the national department's launch of the 'Travel Limpopo' campaign at the Palala Boutique Game Lodge and Spa.
“In the province, the tourism industry is starting to rise again. I am using the words ‘rise’ because like in the ashes we are rising and we are blossoming like flowers in summer. We want to showcase the province and showcase our province by going around.”
Limpopo Tourism, which contributes 10% to the country’s GDP, is estimated to employ at least 100 000 people.

Mokone says since the beginning of the pandemic local government has allocated close to R30 million in relief funds to aid businesses in the area.
“Twenty-eight million rand has been dispersed to the local businesses while R10 million has been allocated to waste pickers. We are also coming up with a socio-recovery plan as we go and do budget adjustments, we will be able to allocate some money to this sector so we can be able to allocate to people who are not able to survive."
