The Health Department has remained mum on reports that government could this week do away with the remaining Covid-19 regulations.
A government memo, which was leaked on social media, suggests that Health Minister Joe Phaahla wrote to provincial Health MECs on the possible dropping of masks in public spaces, the lifting of the ban on gatherings, and the removal of restrictions on travellers entering the country.
The latest data from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) shows the test positivity rate has declined to 4.1% on Monday.
Stellenbosch University Epidemiologist Dr Jo Barnes says the masks served a purpose by curbing the spread of Covid-19.
Barnes warns the Covid-19 test positivity rate is not the only measure of the presence of Covid-19 as it fluctuates.
At the end of the day, Barnes believes there are people who will still benefit from the wearing of masks.
