[LISTEN] Phoenix violence ‘was a massacre’ - Zikalala

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala has reiterated his belief that what transpired in Phoenix, north of Durban during the recent unrest was a massacre.

Zikalala briefed the media on Tuesday alongside Police Minister Bheki Cele.
The two official provided to an update on the violence that ripped through the province last month.
“A massacre is an act of killing a number of people, usually helpless people who could not defend themselves,” said Zikalala.

“So that is a literal definition and I am sure you will share it with me. You have people who died here, 29 were shot in the same area. I am not sure if you want us to be innovative and insert some concepts outside of the real definition.
“The reality is that most of the people who died were innocent people who were travelling along the road. They died within the same area of Phoenix, within a particular period of the unrest they were helpless and not there to fight and not even afforded to defend themselves.”
