Lucky Montana: Prasa never captured under my leadership

Former Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) CEO Lucky Montana has rubbished claims that the state-owned entity was captured.

On Wednesday, the commission of inquiry into state capture began its investigation into alleged corruption at the agency.

 

Evidence leader, Advocate Vas Soni, said there was evidence that the entity was captured and witnesses would testify that it was Montana who allegedly facilitated the corrupt activities.

 

Former board chairperson Popo Molefe also told the commission on Thursday that, when his board assumed office in 2014, the inherited a Prasa with over R500 million in irregular expenditure.

Ramaphosa set up the commission in 2018 following alleged mismanagement of funds at state-owned fund manager. The commission wrapped up its work last year. In its findings, the commission found there had been "substantial impropriety". The 900-odd page document detailed findings against some current and former members of Africa's biggest asset manager, including allegations of corruption.

He said under Montana the board's Audit and Risk Committee found that Prasa was had no financial controls.


"What it meant was that this organisation is broken and a lot of work needed to be done to fix it.”


But speaking at the sidelines of the inquiry, Montana said he would tell his side of the story.


"Prasa has never been captured under my leadership, it was functioning and efficient to transform our rail system. I think at the right time the commission will grant me the opportunity to tell my side of the story and give evidence of the challenges Prasa is facing today."
