Magashule ‘feeling like a tennis ball’ after ANC expulsion
Former African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Ace Magashule said he is feeling ‘fine’ after the party announced his expulsion on Monday.
Magashule said he learned from the media that he had been kicked out of the party after he had been found guilty of bringing it into disrepute.
The ANC’s disciplinary committee had given Magashule seven days to make representations on why he should not be shown the door and kicked out of the party after the committee found that he had contravened the ANC’s constitution.
The former secretary-general was in hot water after he attempted to suspend party president Cyril Ramaphosa, and subsequently failed to apologise to him after he had been instructed to do so.
“I am still feeling like a tennis ball, jumping and running like a cheetah. I am not deterred by anything.”
Magashule said he would respond to his expulsion next week.
Political analyst Ralph Mathekga said this move by the ANC, though expected, may not bode well for the already splintered party.
“It doesn’t help the situation within the party given the depths of divisions. When a member is being expelled from a party that cannot point to unity.
“It creates an environment of mistrust which I think is the predominant atmosphere in the ANC currently.”
This latest development comes after Ramaphosa signed the proclamation paving the way for the Special Investigating Unit to probe allegations of maladministration in the office of the Free State premier during Magashule's tenure.
