The Ipeleng Bagodi old age home made headlines after an elderly resident was allegedly murdered by two others in May.

Both accused subsequently also died, just days apart, while in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru Correction Centre, where they were awaiting bail proceedings.

Dressed in a grey checkered shirt, a beige jacket, and brown pants, the tall figure stood timidly in the dock as he was told to return to court on Thursday when he would be informed of his next appearance in the regional court.

The 59-year-old, who cannot be named due to the charges he faces, was arrested in January after a co-worker allegedly caught him raping one of the female residents with mental disabilities at the old age home.

While there have been claims of more incidents of rape at the facility, the accused faces two counts of rape and is currently out on bail.

This comes after officials from the commission visited the facility following media reports about the allegations of rape, assault and non-compliance.

In July, the Department of Social Development in the North West confirmed to Jacaranda FM News that the old age home had been operating illegally for over a decade and had since been ordered to close its doors.
