Masemola defends cop's no-show at Scopa's Eskom meeting

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has defended the no-show of a senior police official who was due before Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Wednesday.
Brigadier Jap Burger was due to answer questions on information believed to have been handed to him by Andre de Rutyer, as part of the former Eskom CEO's claims of corruption and sabotage at the power utility.
Scopa's chair Mkhuleko Hlengwa said he had instructed that security be provided for Burger after the commissioner's office raised concerns about his safety on Tuesday.
Masemola on Wednesday tried to explain to the committee that Burger's main concern was showing his face on camera.
"The main issue is not about me protecting him. The main issue here is after he presents here like I do, thereafter what are the implications to himself and his life."
The commissioner did confirm, though, that there was a meeting between the brigadier and De Ruyter where information was exchanged.
"I engaged with Brigadier Burger and he did give me feedback and he met Mr De Ruyter, and De Ruyter gave him information, but he did not give him the Fivaz report, but yes, he was given information. He took it to one of the investigation bodies which he was part of."
