Nkoana-Mashabane urges equal pay as Women’s Month kick off

Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Maite Nkoana-Mashabane says women deserve to be paid as much as their male counterparts.
Nkoana-Mashabane delivered the keynote address during the launch of Women’s Month Durban on Monday.
Banyana Banyana’s recent triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has sparked a public debate around equal pay in the country.
The debate was sparked by reports that the players would receive less money in prize bonuses than their male colleagues did for reaching the quarter-finals of the men's tournament in 2019.
Nkoana-Mashabane said it was bittersweet to welcome back the champions of Africa knowing they are not on equal footing with their male counterparts.
“It was great to receive Banyana Banyana at the Union Buildings, but to also hear that they earn 10 times less than their peers was something that needs fixing.
“The constitution says we are equal so we must be equal indeed and in need.”
