Mashatile: Education still benefitting from Bengu policies
Updated | By Selaki Ledwaba
Deputy President Paul Mashatile says Professor Sibusiso Bengu had the skills to revolutionise education.
Mashatile delivered the eulogy at Bengu's official funeral at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Bengu passed away in December at the age of 90.
He served as democratic South Africa's first Minister of Education.
“He served in every portfolio intending to improve the lives of the majority. He never undermined or set aside any responsibility or task assigned to him,” Mashatile said.
“It came as no surprise when the late President Nelson Mandela appointed him as the first democratic Minister of Education. His knowledge, skills and contributions to various sectors of education showed that he could revolutionalise education,” Mashatile said
Mashatile believes South Africa’s education system is still reaping the benefits of Bengu’s decisions 30 years ago.
“He also played a pivotal role in facilitating the transition of the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme,” Mashatile said, adding that Bengu’s contributions to education have greatly shaped the education system.
