Limpopo MEC for Social Development, Florence Radzilani has strongly condemned an attack and rape of a 101-year-old woman.
The centenarian was found sleeping in her home when an unknown assailant brutally raped her at Zaaiplas village in Sekhukhune District a week ago.
The suspect has since been arrested and is expected to appear before the Groblersdal Magistrate Court on Monday.
"We welcome the arrest of the suspect and MEC Radzilani trust that justice will be served with appropriate sentence upon conviction.
"A team of social workers will be dispersed to this case in order to provide psychosocial support to this centenarian," says department spokesperson Joshua Kwapa.
Radzilani has urged all citizens to protect elders and to support initiatives aimed at enhancing their safety and well-being.
“As we observe August as Women’s Month, a time dedicated to honouring and uplifting women’s voices and experiences, this horrific crime stands in stark contrast to the values we hold dear.
"We should be celebrating the strength and resilience of women, yet we find ourselves mourning the violation of an innocent elderly woman, illustrating a critical need for immediate action," she added.
