Police have confirmed the device found in Menlyn Maine Shopping Centre in Pretoria East was harmless.
A man was arrested at a bank in the shopping centre on Tuesday after claiming to be armed with a bomb.
Brooklyn police spokesperson Colette Weilbach says the man handed a note containing a threat to a bank teller at an Absa branch.

The centre was subsequently evacuated and the man taken into custody.
She says the police’s bomb disposal and K9 units were called out to inspect the device.
"The SAPS declared the mall safe around 15:00. This is after the bomb disposal unit investigated what was found inside the bank and declared that it was a fake bomb and not a real bomb. Around 15:00 the centre was reopened for the public."
The motive is unclear and the suspect will appear in court soon.
