Mogoeng: Courts can deal with political cases
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng doesn't believe political parties turning to the courts to solve their problems will end up causing a constitutional crisis.
Mogoeng Mogoeng and representatives of the Heads of Court met with the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services to discuss the increasing number of court cases brought by political parties.
The Chief Justice says the courts were designed to solve disputes - including those of a political nature.
"They cannot be faulted if political parties ever get to the point where they are convinced that the only avenue that can do justice to their concerns, is the courts," Mogoeng said.

The Chief Justice said the courts were designed to dissolve disputes.
"Imagine if the opposite were to obtain, it means that people would then have to take the law into their own hands," he said.
Mogoeng also said members of the police and prosecutors have to be adequately equipped to deal with these types of cases.
Questions surrounding the head of the National Prosecution Authority, Shaun Abrahams' fitness to hold office as well as the Public Protector's State Of Capture Report were however not discussed at the meeting.
