Narrow escape for driver as sinkhole opens
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
A female driver had a lucky escape after a massive sinkhole opened on the R34 in KwaZulu-Natal during peak time traffic on Friday afternoon.
An off-duty Netcare 911 paramedic was traveling on the R34/John Ross road when the traffic came to a standstill as the road collapsed.
The incident occurred about 200m from the Mondi traffic lights, blocking traffic travelling from Empangeni towards Richards Bay.
A female driver of a white car was very fortunate to pass over the remaining edge as the road collapsed.
Her rear wheel was badly damaged and Netcare911's Nick Dollman says she was forced to stop.
"Fellow motorists came to her assistance and helped change her tyre."
He adds the paramedic also attended to two motorists who had collided.
"The drivers attempt to avoid the collapsed road, fortunately neither were injured."
