New High Court for Mpumalanga
Updated | By Nokukhanya Mntambo
President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opened a new Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela on Friday.
The court came into operation in May, but this morning’s presidential launch was attended by other top officials, including Justice Minister Ronald Lamola and Mpumalanga Judge President Francis Legodi.
Ramaphosa said the opening of this court is a milestone towards enhancing access to justice for all communities.
"This is truly a historic day. It's a day for celebration for the people of Mpumlanga as we officially open the first provincial high court right here in Mbombela," said a jovial Ramaphosa.
"The impact of this court must extend beyond its magnificent buildings, it is not mere bricks and mortars that matter. It must empower every man, every woman and every child in this province. This court must be a beacon of hope for all who have suffered prejudice, victimisation, injustice or the violation of their rights."

Prasa's Group Chief Executive Officer, Nkosinathi Sishi says Prasa and Eskom's debt has been settled. Sishi adds that when Prasa wants to pay an amount over a certain threshold, the Department of Transport has to be involved in the process. "At the time, we could only pay R22 million and Eskom could not accept that," explains Sishi.
Until earlier this year, Mpumalanga was the only province without its own high court.
The court will also see much relief to the Pretoria High Court as Mpumalanga residents will no longer have to travel to Pretoria for their cases to be heard.
"In many ways this court represents a new era for the citizens and the people of this province who have in the past had to travel long distances and difficult terrains to get access to justice. Until now the people and the citizens of this province whose matters fell outside the jurisdiction of the local magistrates courts had to obtain relief in the high court in Pretoria," he added.
