New MPs sworn in at National Assembly
New Members of Parliament have taken an oath of office at the first sitting of the National Assembly.
Of the 18 parties in the seventh administration, 11 are returning parties, while seven others will be represented in Parliament for the first time.
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is presiding over the sitting where the country's new president, speaker and deputy speaker will be elected.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International South Africa is urging the incoming government to place human rights and youth unemployment at the forefront.
The organisation's Rejoice Motaung made the appeal ahead of Youth Day on Sunday.
She said this will enable the country to ensure a brighter future for the youth.
"Thirty years after gaining independence, young people continue to confront significant challenges such as high unemployment, sexual violence, and inadequate access to quality basic education, among others. Since the youth represent the future of our nation, it is imperative to address these issues with dedicated focus."
