NFP: Malema proof that ‘SA has not healed from the past’
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
The National Freedom party (NFP) says it understands why Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema labelled "the majority" of Indian South Africans as "racist."
Malema has come under fire for the remarks he made at a Youth Day rally in Klerksdorp on Saturday
"We were not all oppressed the same. Indians had all sorts of resources Africans didn't have, coloureds as well. The majority of Indians are racist. I'm not saying all, and I'm saying majority," Malema is quoted as saying.
But NFP spokesperson Sabelo Sigudu says Malema needs to be more careful when commenting on racial issues.
"As the NFP we strongly condemn the manner in which he raised this comment because we believe even the platform he used to raise these issues was not an appropriate platform.
"But the truth of the matter is that Malema is showing that our people have not healed from past imbalances. We don't want him to be caught up in a trap whereby he is playing a divisive role in this matter , we want this matter to be addressed
decisively in a correct platform not in platforms where Indians aren't even present" says Sigudu.
Sigudu says the issue of race needs to be discussed and addressed as the ongoing racial divisions and tensions cannot be allowed to fester.
