‘No commitment’ on when 100 MW IPP capacity will come online, says Presidency

Government says it cannot yet confirm when the additional 100 MW capacity from Independent Power Producers will come online.

This comes as the country has been battling stage two rolling blackouts for the past two weeks, with Eskom unable to keep up with the demand for electricity.
Head of Project Management in the Presidency Rudi Dicks says they estimate it will come online between 2022-2024.
"I don't think we are able to commit that a project from Sibanye or Anglo or any of the 58 project developers is going to happen at this point in time and it's going to happen and end. This is not in the public domain but a private sector initiative.

"I think we can estimate because if we work hard and do the reform as we've done before we estimate that many of the projects will come online between 2022-2024. I think that is broadly what we want to indicate. There are many factors when you build these kinds of things."
The power utility is currently undergoing an unbundling process which will see Eskom being divided into three units.
These are transmission, generation and distribution.
Transmission is expected to be completed in December, which will lay the foundation for a fully independent grid operator.
