Magashule’s driver appeared in court on Wednesday in connection with the theft of a Pierneef painting from the provincial offices.

The case was postponed to March 25 to allow the accused to obtain legal representation.

Free State Cosatu 'worried' about reports of coronavirus quarantine in Thaba Nchu

This comes after reports that government plans to quarantine more than 150 South Africans in Thaba Nchu, about 63km from Bloemfontein, once they have landed back from the coronavirus epicentre. Government has been able to confirm that 201 South Africans are living in Wuhan.

“The evidence that we have shows that the painting was allegedly taken from Magashule’s office without his knowledge. The driver took the painting and tried to sell it without permission or authorization,” says provincial NPA spokesperson Phaladi Shuping.

The driver is alleged to have stolen the painting from Magashule’s office during his time as provincial premier.

He is facing charges of theft, money laundering, fraud and defeating the administration of justice.

Magashule is currently serving as the secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC).
