NUM threatens to shut down all operations at Seriti

The National Union of Mineworkers on Monday threatened to shut down all operations at Seriti Resources if the coal miner does not sign its memorandum of grievances.
This follows retrenchment notices handed to 1,143 employees by the privately-owned coal mine.
The union marched to the company in Emalahleni on Monday.
The union’s provincial chairperson, Bizzah Motubatse, said the union had submitted a memorandum to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, asking it to reject the planned retrenchments.
“Seriti wants to replace permanent employment with contractors, we are therefore calling for DMRE to intervene and prove us wrong because from where we are standing, we believe they (DMRE) are captured.”
Motubatse said a company cannot expect to retrench such a large number of employees without facing any consequences.
“We are calling for a swift intervention, and if the memorandum is not responded to accordingly, then we will call all mother of strikes and close operations at Seriti.”
NUM represents about 3,000 of the estimated 5,000-strong staff at Seriti Resources.
