The Johannesburg metro police arrested 168 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past weekend.
The arrests were made through patrols, attending complaints, and targeted operations throughout the city.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the number of people who drive while intoxicated is “deeply concerning”.
"Driving under the influence of alcohol poses a severe threat not only to the driver but also to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. The consequences of such irresponsible behaviour can be devastating, leading to accidents, injuries, or even loss of life.
"It is imperative for all motorists to understand the dangers associated with driving under the influence of alcohol and the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel.
"The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department reiterates its unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring road safety for all residents and visitors.
"We urge all motorists to prioritise safety, obey traffic laws, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or any other substances.”
