Parktown Boys initiation ‘an eye-opener’
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
The Gauteng Department of Education says it’s looking into initiation
at schools following the findings of a second investigation into allegations of
assault at Parktown Boys High in Johannesburg.
The report by Harris Nupen Molebatsi Attorneys states that since 2009 “initiation practices involving some quite severe assaults have taken place at various camps and on various occasions and in various sporting teams”.
The department's spokesperson Steve Mabona admits the findings were an eye-opener for authorities.
Six of the learners at the prestigious Parktown Boys High are currently on suicide watch, while thirty-three other boys are receiving counseling, following various incidents of assault.
Mabona says the department will monitor all schools across Gauteng to ensure any form of initiation does not include assault or abuse.
“That one, it must stop with immediate effect.”
