Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says Pfizer will deliver 7 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine to the country by June.
The minister said this at Khayelitsha Hospital on Wednesday afternoon were he and President Cyril Ramaphosa received their first vaccination along with frontline healthcare workers.
On Tuesday night close 80 000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine arrived at OR Tambo International Airport.
Mkhize told journalists at the hospital that Pfizer has committed to deliver 7 million vials of their vaccine in June.
"This is all because we asked for consideration as South Africa is the epicentre on the continent and fact that we are going through a raging second wave.
"We then asked they change the plans that they had, we had to rearrange everything," said the minister.
The minister stated that, through their discussions with various companies, they have enough vaccine doses to cover the 40 million South Africans in order to reach herd immunity.
