The prisoners had already appeared in court on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, house breaking and theft.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said the prisoners overpowered police officers at the holding cells inside the court.

“It is alleged that the prisoners overpowered police officers working at the court cells and broke the main door to make their escape. They were appearing for cases committed at Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Ennerdale,” he said.

Dlamini warned the public not to confront the prisoners, but to contact the nearest police station if they spot them.
