[PICTURES] Remembering Marikana massacre 7 years on
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
August 16 marks the seven year since 34 mineworkers were shot and killed by police at Marikana during a protracted protest for better wages.
The massacre took place at the Lonmin Platinum Mine, where mineworkers were demanding a minimum salary of R12,500 a month.
When negotiations between workers and management reached a standstill, the workers engaged in strike action and the aftermath left an indelible mark on the country.

Soth Africans took to social media to pay condolences to the deceased and to commemorate the day.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was a director and shareholder at Lonmin at the time, tweeted his message.
The Marikana tragedy stands out as the darkest moment in the life of our young democracy. Today we remember our 44 compatriots who lost their lives in Marikana seven years ago this week. Never again can we allow such a tragedy to befall our nation.
