Police, taxi owners stop looting attempt in Hammarsdale
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Police and taxi owners in Hammardale have had to team up to protect businesses from potential looting and attacks.
A private security company says it was tipped off that stores in Hammarsdale and Hammardale Junction were going to be targeted on Thursday night.
Ndumiso Manqele, who's with Qaphela Security Services, says their members were also on scene.
"Luckily enough, police were aware of the situation. They came out in numbers together with the taxi owners and security companies that are in the area. They were able to safeguard the mall.
"Nothing was taken or damaged, nothing was looted, only the tyres were burnt on the road but no one was injured or killed."
Police in KZN were put on high alert after calls were made on social media for a national shutdown today over skyrocketing fuel price increases.
Manqele says taxi operators played a significant role in protecting the area.
"They said they want to come and assist the malls and shops that are in the area because it's giving business to them. So they are not allowing anybody to loot at this time."
