Portfolio committee: Dlamini will learn from her mistakes

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Social Development believes minister Bathabile Dlamini will learn from the social grant payment crisis.

The committee has welcomed the Constitutional Court ruling.

The court has instructed the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Cash Paymasters Services (CPS) to continue paying social grants until another entity is able to do so, with their contract extended for 12 months.

Social development minister Dlamini has also been ordered to file affidavits as to why she should not be personally held liable for the crisis.

Committee chairperson Zoleka Capa says the crisis should never have happened.

Capa confirms a special committee meeting will be called soon to allow Sassa and the social development department to outline their plan of action.

When asked whether the court's harsh words against Dlamini were justified, Capa replied saying: "I think it is. I think also the minister has apologised. The minister will learn from her own mistakes and be a better person in future."

The committee will conduct an oversight visit to the Free State between 27 and 31 March to monitor Sassa and the social development's compliance with the Public Finance Management Act.

Dlamini has since apologised to grant recipients.

"The minister wants to apologise to social grant beneficiaries, who have endured a lot of anxiety and fear over the past few weeks. Now we will ensure we comply with the court order," said Dlamini's spokesperson Lumka Oliphant.
