The Transport Department says Leonard Ramatlakane has been fired as chairperson of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.
The decision follows a Prasa investigation into the alleged misuse of one of its properties in Cape Town by Ramatlakane without following the proper processes.
Reports have been swirling about his family's alleged use of the luxury property, meant for top Prasa execs.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transport’s Collen Msibi says Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has expressed her appreciation to the chair for his leadership.
He says during his time in office, Ramatlakane recovered around 13 rail lines.
"He exceeded the target of 10 rail lines that were initially earmarked by Prasa for recovery.
"Minister Chikunga further said that it was under his watch Prasa was able to restore a sizeable number of Prasa rail services in various metros in the country which has ensured that Prasa reclaims its status as a mass mover of commuters in the republic."
Msibi reiterated the department's commitment to clean administration and governance across its entities.
