A Pretoria motorist has shot and killed a man suspected to be a member of the so-called spikes gang terrorising motorists on some highways in the province.
It is understood that three armed men attacked the family whose car had stopped after they got a puncture on Friday evening.
The victims were driving on the R80 highway in Akasia when they hit what they suspected to be spikes placed on the road.
While the driver was changing the tyre, suspects fired shots at them. The driver returned fire hitting one suspect on the upper body.
His accomplices managed to flee on foot.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the suspect was certified dead by paramedics.
“Members of Flying Squad who were part of Operation O Kae Molao conducted in Akasia and Garankuwa responded promptly, and a replica firearm was recovered at the scene, if motorists suspect driving over spikes, they should immediately alert the police and remain extra vigilant."
Masondo said they have launched a manhunt for the suspects who escaped from the scene.
