Protests over power cuts hit Soweto, Vaal

Gauteng motorists have been urged to avoid several areas around Soweto and the Vaal due to ongoing community protests.
Angry residents took to the streets on Wednesday, barricading roads with burning tyres over what they describe as constant power outages in the area.

Eskom has also been implementing load reduction in high-density areas with a suffering from non-payment and a high number of illegal connections.
Load reduction sees residents dumped in darkness for several hours.
Gauteng Traffic spokesperson Obed Sibasa says members of the military, police and metro police have been deployed to the areas.
“There are traffic disruptions as major roads have been barricaded with blocks and burning tyres due to electricity as alleged.
“Some of the affected roads and townships include Zone 4 Meadowlands… Braamfisher, Snake Park, Zola, Mdeni and the Vaal.”
