Public servants threaten to down tools

The Public Servants Association (PSA) has given the government seven days to respond to their wage demands after the latest round of wage demands deadlocked.

PSA acting general manager Tahir Maepa says government has until next week Monday to respond or face industrial action.

"Our demands include that the state revise their current offer and it should not be a three year agreement. They must increase the housing allowance to R1500, they must also increase medical aid allowance.

“They should also delink spouses from the housing allowances which is a discriminatory practice where the state only provides a housing allowance for one spouse if they are married,” Maepa said.

If no resolution is found some 240 000 workers could down tools.

"We have members in very strategic areas of public service, areas like NPA, department of justice, home affairs and water affairs.

"The strike will have a huge impact both economically and it may bring hardships to the communities," Maepa adds.
