Ramaphosa to answer questions on energy crisis, Eskom corruption
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
President Cyril Ramaphosa will have to answer questions on the role of the minister of electricity in resolving the energy crisis and the progress in combating corruption at Eskom.
He will present his answers to the National Assembly on Thursday at 2pm.
Ramaphosa named Kgosientsho Ramokgopa as the minister of electricity during his cabinet reshuffle following his State of the Nation Address earlier this year.
However, concerns have been mounting over the lack of clarity around the powers and functions of the minister, who is based in the presidency.
MPs will also query the president to justify on how basing the minister of electricity in his office is not an attempt to shift oversight on energy policy away from Parliament.
They also want time frames that he has put in place for the minister to address energy insecurity and reduce load shedding.
The presidency’s Vincent Magwenya says Ramaphosa will also outline the government's approach to fight illicit money flow and an update on the just energy transition.
"The President will present South Africa’s diverse initiatives to fight illicit money flows, terror financing and money laundering as part of enhancing the integrity of South Africa’s financial systems, keeping the country safe and safeguarding the country’s participation in the global economy.
“President Ramaphosa will detail progress with regard to the country’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan, formulated in 2022 to set out the scale of investment needed by the country to meet the international carbon emissions reduction commitments.”
